10/08 - Chinese Foreign Experts Friendship Gold Medal

George F. Emerson, a leading piano designer in the United States and  member of the Hailun Dream Team, has received the highest honor  China awards to foreign experts for helping advance the development  of Chinese society, economy, technology, science, and education. Mr.  Emerson received the 2008 China Friendship Gold Medal Award, one of  only 50 foreigners to be so honored, out of 485,000 foreign experts  in China.

"Frank Emerson is a valued partner in the development of high quality  Hailun pianos", said Theresa Perry, CEO, Hailun Distribution. "His  expertise led directly to the creation of our new concert grand model 198 and  he has engineering input on virtually all of our piano designs. He is  invaluable to our efforts -- and a nice person to boot! We applaud  this deserved recognition."

Steve Mills, Hailun Distribution VP Sales, added, "Frank's engineering knowledge base and career in piano design have made his contributions to Hailun vital to the outstanding quality and value dealers find in our pianos. We are proud of his work and value his friendship."

This was the second honor bestowed on Mr. Emerson by the Chinese. In  2006, the provincial government of Ningbo awarded him the Camellia  Prize for his contributions to piano manufacturing in that region of  China. Mr. Emerson earned undergraduate degrees from the University of  Alaska, Anchorage, and Southwestern Oklahoma State University. He  earned his master's degree from Ball State University, Muncie, IN.

01/08 - HAILUN USA Recognized in Music Merchandise Review Magazine

“It was a great show for us,” declared Theresa Perry. “As a young company, we are at a bit of an advantage in the U.S. and Canadian markets – we have no direction to go but up!” To illustrate the point, she reported their NAMM Show sales were up nearly 350% from last year, “so we’re feeling pretty good about that.”

It was only the third NAMM Show appearance for the parent company, which has only been making pianos under the Hailun name since the mid-1990s.  At the show they unveiled their larger grands: the HG 198 and the HG 218. The 6’5” and 7’0” models were extraordinarily well received, she said.

“We garnered a number of new dealers at the show, though we are selective about who becomes part of the Hailun family,” Perry said. “We are looking for those who are dedicated to this business and fair-minded and ethical, both with us and with the customer, and also those who can respond quickly and effectively to the customers’ needs.”

She maintains that there are people out there who will buy pianos during good and bad times, so the key is to help dealers find what strategies work best in a down market so they can continue to build market share and enjoy success. While she began her adult life in the music business, Perry eventually got an MBA and took a detour to work in the high-tech industry -- so she’s no stranger to market upheavals. “The traditionalist may begin to believe the doom-and-gloom noises in the market and it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy,” she commented. “But we can transport success in a way that refuses to follow that trend. I believe piano dealers can position themselves positively during down times.”

More than just words of encouragement, Perry said that Haliun has some specific strategies they can share with their dealers to help them become more creative in their approach and more successful selling pianos. Otherwise, the importance is in the ability to focus on the task at hand: “If you set objectives, and won’t take ‘no’ for an answer, you’ll be more successful than if you just listen to the negativity around us. Our U.S. corporate motto is ‘Aspire to higher performance’ and we believe in that.”

12/07 - Hailun Distribution Recognized by Rosie O'Donnell

HAILUN DISTRIBUTION RECOGNIZED BY ROSIE O’DONNELL

At the recent Rosie’s Broadway Kids Gala Fundraiser held at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel, Theresa Perry, President of Hailun Distribution, LLC, was thanked by Rosie O’Donnell for her leadership supporting the public school teaching program of the Rosie’s Broadway Kids Foundation.

Ms. Perry has supported the work of the Foundation since the formation of Hailun US operations in 2006. “Rosie’s Foundation, starting with a handful of the most unlikely kids seven years ago, has brought a fabulously enriching experience in music and performance to now over 1,700 young people. The work they are doing is changing lives for the better. We, in the music industry, know how much such an experience can mean to a person and I fully support the great commitment this organization demonstrates every day in the lives of these kids.”

Performing to a selection of songs from Broadway classics, Rosie’s Broadway Kids shone brilliantly as they wowed guests of the Gala. Following these polished young performers, the inimitable Paul Simon presented a concert whose finale was a joint presentation with the RBKids. The audience responded enthusiastically to the musical show. With Rosie at the podium, a raucous live auction raised $110,000 culminating a fund raising effort that totaled over one million dollars. The proceeds go directly to continue funding RBKids programming in Manhattan public schools, whose arts and music funding have been eliminated through budget cuts.

Ms. O’Donnell recognized the significance of the donation by Hailun Distribution of 5 pianos to the new state-of-the-art school, the Maravel Center, scheduled to open in March, 2008. In recognition of this great gift, the piano salon will be named in honor of Hailun.

10/07 - Hailun Presents Brad's New Piano - Kentucky Youth Has Dream Fulfilled

Brad Hobbs has been dreaming about a piano – a real piano – for years. This motivated young man loves piano music and wanted, since he was a child, to learn to play the piano. His only source had been a small 18 note keyboard, which he started playing at age 6, and he prevailed upon his piano playing friends to help him learn piano music.

Living in rural Kentucky coal mine country, Brad took advantage of his computer and reached out to the world to see whether he could obtain a used instrument somewhere with which to pursue his dreams. His mother Tracy and father Orville work very hard to provide a secure and loving environment for their son. But a piano was not in the realm of possibility.

BRAD’S INTEREST REACHES MEMBERS OF THE PIANO FORUM As Brad explored the digital world, Piano Forum members took a real interest in this special young man and began to spread the word about Brad and his quest. “Two of our dealers, Matt Grossman of Vintage Piano Works, and Tony Hahn of Past Perfect Pianos, contacted our regional representative, Lauren Wallace. It was Lauren who made us aware of this effort.” said Stevan Mills, Hailun U.S. National Sales Manager. “We are happy that our new 123 fully agraffed upright has such an appreciative home!”

Hailun Distribution, LLC, has, as a corporate goal, the objective of having one annual community-focused project. “We have a substantial commitment, originally targeted for 2007, that has been delayed until Spring 2008. That left us with the special opportunity to participate in this effort,” stated Theresa Perry, Hailun US President. “Though we are still a very young company, we developed this annual community project in our very first three months of operation. It reflects our strong commitment to the intrinsic value of music in anyone’s life.”

“We encourage our dealers to let us know of special circumstances and we select one upon which we can act,” continued Ms. Perry. “We were pleased to be able to work with Brad and his family and also must acknowledge the assistance of Keyboard Carriage and Sally Phillips, who prepped and tuned Brad’s piano. The responsiveness of members of the Piano Forum provided the impetus for this wonderful happening and kudos to them.”

Tracy Hobbs shared her feelings about this happy turn of events. “There are people out there that care about you,” she said. “There is a song called “Angels Among Us” that pretty much says what I feel. Brad is not a spoiled child and he really appreciates everything that has happened. I want people to know to keep praying. Eventually, He will answer at the right time.” When asked if there was piano music in her home now, she replied “Oh yes, - lots!”

Brad, who is home schooled, has always liked music, choosing Classical style for relaxing, and he especially likes Beethoven. Quite eclectic in his preferences, he also enjoys Country and Hip Hop. His other serious interest is computers. “We wish Brad well and hope that he and his family enjoy many hours of music in their home”, said Ms Perry. “Truly, music is a life-changing and life-enhancing experience and we are happy to be able to participate in this event with the Hobbs family.”

4/07 - Hailun Grand Stars at Consular Gala

Hailun’s 151 high polish Ebony grand piano featuring Piano Disc player recently stole the show at the Georgia International Consular Ball Silent Auction.  Held in a Ballroom of the world famous Georgia Aquarium, surrounded by plexiglass walls looking into the undersea world of more than 100,000 fish including whale sharks and beluga whales, the Ball recognizes Georgia’s resident diplomats for their efforts in promoting world business and cultural ties with the Southeastern U.S.  Fifty-seven governments from around the globe have established facilities in Atlanta.

“We are pleased to participate in such an important international effort”, said Theresa Perry, President of Hailun Distribution, LLC. “The world has many strong dynamics and the more we in the music industry can do to foster good communication and to raise one’s ‘finer spirit’ through music experiences, the better. We know that music truly is the international voice.”

Attended by the diplomatic corps, Georgia political movers and corporate executives, this year’s event featured a Silent Auction and the presentation of the “Citizen Diplomat Award” to Delta Airlines. Received by Delta Chairman, Gerald Grinstein, the award recognizes worldwide, individuals or institutions for significant efforts in furthering international understanding and cultural exchange.

The Silent Auction raises funds for the non-profit Georgia Council for International Visitors, which works to promote international understanding though its citizen diplomacy programs. Hailun’s Grand Piano was a center of attention as it performed using Piano Disc technology.  A submission by Hailun Distribution, LLC, the piano was purchased by Jackie and Zack Parker of Atlanta.  Seen here, the Parkers happily pose at their new piano.  Surrounded by friends, Jackie Parker shares her joy at finding “the perfect piano for our newly-decorated home.  I have been moving the furniture in our living room around and it just hasn’t felt right….it has been waiting for just this piano! 1/07 - Hailun Piano Partners with Rosie's Broadway Kids

Five new pianos among first in-kind donations

It was announced today in New York City by the Board of Directors of Rosie’s Broadway Kids that Hailun pianos would be the exclusive instrument outfitting their new home in Manhattan’s Theatre District to open in October 2007.

Hailun, a new name to the U.S. piano market, has been in the piano business for over 25 years.  Initially supplying world-renowned piano builders with high quality metal components such as plates and pins, Hailun began manufacturing their own pianos in 1996.  Rosie’s Broadway Kids (RBKids), founded by Rosie and Kelli O’Donnell in 2003 provides free in-school and after-school musical theater instruction to New York’s public school students beginning in the fifth grade.

“The Hailun name was completely unknown to us when Theresa Perry suggested this partnership.” said A.J. Pietrantone, RBKids Managing Director.  “We have now had the opportunity to see and use the Hailun product in one of our participating schools, and find it exceptional.  We are pleased at this opportunity to work with Hailun Distribution to further the important program work of Rosie’s Broadway Kids, and are extremely grateful for this generous donation.”  HailunUSA will provide to RBKids at no cost, two grand pianos and three uprights for the three studios and two practice rooms in this new facility, currently under renovation.

“Rosie’s Broadway Kids was highlighted during a television interview I just happened to hear when Rosie O’Donnell described her Foundation’s work of bringing performing arts programs to the neediest public schools in New York City,” continued Theresa Perry, U.S. Manager for Hailun. “As a former public school music teacher, I had the privilege of working with thousands of students and understand that the positive changes wrought by exposure to the performing arts is absolute.”

“Rosie’s Broadway Kids – with it’s dedicated and talented staff – is changing the future of generations of New York City public school students,” continued Ms. Perry.  “The impact of this experience will not only influence each participating student and their immediate family, but will change the course of those lives and the lives of their children. This is an amazing legacy for which the group should be given enormous credit. And for Hailun, which builds legacy instruments, this is a perfect partnership.”

Lori Klinger, founding Artistic Director added, “Our professional teaching artists are devoted to providing instruction in dance, music, drama and a professional theatre experience for children who might not otherwise have any such opportunity.  We teach musical theatre not only as a potential vocation, but as a necessary aspect of a balanced education.  The result of the experience is such that children are much more likely to live confidently, be motivated to learn, and embrace a life-long appreciation for the arts.”

In keeping with the special ambiance of this industry, Hailun Distribution’s corporate philosophy states in part that it will do well by doing good.  As a young, six month old company, this is the first commitment towards the life-changing effects of its unique philanthropic focus.

11/06 - Atlanta Metro selected as U.S. corporate headquarters location for China-based company

Hailun Distribution, LLC, the US distribution arm of Hailun Musical Instruments Co Ltd, Ningbo, China, has selected Lilburn, Georgia as the location of its first office in the United States. “As a transportation center in the Eastern US population belt and easily accessible from port cities, Atlanta is a very effective location for our operation,” said Theresa Perry, President.

A manufacturer of pianos, the Hailun Company was recently feted in China in an award presentation by the Chinese government. This award designates Hailun as one of the outstanding manufacturers in China. The special “China Outstanding Brand” award, presented only once every three years, has recognized Hailun as only one of four top China brands out of 180 manufacturers in their product area. “Even though our company produces the fewest total units of the four honorees,” continued Ms. Perry, “we are recognized for our excellent product quality, customer support and market acceptance.”

Holding the coveted ISO 9001:2000 Certificate of Quality Management, Hailun is now opening a dealer network and major sales operation in the United States. “We see a great business opportunity in the US and feel that Atlanta provides a central and beneficial location for our efforts,” said Ms. Perry. “Our national marketing and sales consultant, Stevan Mills, resides here as well.”

“Hailun has product on several continents and is the standard instrument of the Music Academy of Vienna,” continued Mr. Mills. “This is a special opportunity to be part of a ‘ground floor’ effort in the US. Hailun products are beautifully crafted and offer a great mid-market value. We are not striving for cookie cutter numbers – we are making as many quality instruments as our workers can reasonably achieve.”

In the effort to broaden the Hailun knowledge base and to include the best design and technical enhancements, the company has created a special international team of artisans. These four recognized talents contribute to and oversee the evolvement of Hailun manufacturing advances. Major Designer George Emerson, previously with Mason & Hamlin and Baldwin; Zlatkouic Sibin, tuning expert with prior affiliation at Bosendorfer; Peter Veletzy, senior technical advisor and Ema Shigeru, grand piano production with 30 years of experience at Kawai, comprise this industry powerhouse of talent and expertise.

Hailun, with approximately 550,000 square feet of production space, employs 800 workers and utilizes some of the most advanced digitally controlled equipment currently available.. “Our Chairman, Mr. Hailun Chen, embodies a truly entrepreneurial spirit and, at the same time, embraces traditional values,” said Ms. Perry. “His vision clearly reflects this. Ningbo is traditionally viewed as the birthplace of the first piano builder in China. Mr. Chen wants Ningbo to also be known as the home of the best piano built in China.”

“We are excited about bringing our company to Atlanta metro”. said Mr. Mills. “This is the beginning of a great partnership”, added Ms. Perry, “ and we look forward to a fabulous future in the US.”

11/06 - Chinese Piano Maker Opens Showroom in Metro Atlanta

Ningbo Hailun Musical Instruments Co. Ltd., a Chinese manufacturer of high quality grand and vertical pianos is launching its first North American marketing efforts from its newly opened headquarters and showroom in Lilburn.

Hailun, which already sells its high quality, “legacy” pianos in China, Japan and European countries, opened its first U.S. subsidiary Hailun Distribution LLC northeast of Atlanta last month because of the city’s proximity to potential consumers.

“Half of the U.S. population east of the Mississippi is available to us within only a few hours,” said Hailun Distribution President Theresa Perry, who said company executives were considering locating in California until she explained to them Atlanta’s importance as a logistics hub.

Ms. Perry, a pianist, who has lived in Atlanta for 20 years, met Hailun executives more than a year ago through another company that she runs, Atlantek Network Inc.

Ms. Perry founded Atlantek, a technology consulting and search firm, in 1988 but continued to be involved with the music industry over the years, she said. She first started working with Hailun executives as a business consultant in the summer of 2005 and helped them with the production of their U.S. debut appearance at the NAMM trade show in January, 2006.

Following the successful NAMM trade show in Anaheim, Calif., Hailun executives decided to open an office in the U.S., Ms. Perry said, adding that the company’s pianos “were a real buzz,” among industry professionals at the show.

A piano parts manufacturer supplying major piano makers worldwide, Hailun began building complete pianos in 1991 and now produces what Ms. Perry calls “legacy” instruments because their innovative designs and quality craftsmanship allows them to be passed from generation to generation.

The company employs George F. Emerson, an American piano designer who worked for Baldwin Piano Inc. and Mason & Hamlin. As a member of the Hailun “Special Team”, in addition to famous design and manufacturing experts from Europe and Japan, Emerson helps to elevate the craftsmanship and artistic value of these pianos, she said.

Ms. Perry works with Stevan Mills, Hailun Distribution’s national sales and marketing manager, to provide the pianos to dealers across the U.S. The company is expected to take on eight to twelve more employees within the next two years.

Hailun is the second company from Ningbo, a port city south of Shanghai, China, to invest in Georgia within the past year.

In June, condiment manufacturer Ningbo Lehui Food Machinery Co. Ltd. announced that it would invest $12 million to $15 million to start a manufacturing facility in Newnan in a joint venture with New Jersey-based WY Industries Inc. The announcement represented China’s first investment in Georgia.

Such investment means Ningbo business and government officials are starting to see Georgia as a viable business destination, according to Jane Li, president of the Georgia chapter of the Ningbo Business Promotion Association.

Ms. Li also represents the Ningbo Foreign Investment Development Board in Georgia and is working to build closer ties between Atlanta and Ningbo.

In August of last year, she helped to organize a meeting between Ningbo Mayor Mao Guanglie and Atlanta businesspeople.

Most recently, she welcomed Rongzhong Ye, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Ningbo Municipal People’s Government, and Bangjie He, director of the U.S. office of the Ningbo Economic and Technology Development Zone, which is based in New Jersey, to Atlanta.

Mr. He and Mr. Ye were in Atlanta for an Oct. 19-20 economic development conference for Atlanta’s Sister Cities.

While Ningbo is not an Atlanta Sister City, representatives attended the conference to express their interest in developing closer ties with Atlanta.

Sister City relationships have traditionally fostered cultural and educational ties but the City of Atlanta, in partnership with a local United Nations affiliate CIFAL Atlanta, leveraged its Sister City relationships to build stronger economic ties internationally.

More than 100 representatives from 13 of Atlanta’s 18 Sister Cities attended.

For more information on the conference, visit www.cifalatlanta.org.
